"SHIVER ON THE RIVER"
It's late January and the "Shiver on the River" Walleye fishing tournament is in full swing on the Saginaw River. Fishermen from all over are gathering each morning and evening to fish for the famous Saginaw River Walleyes.
Not too many years ago the walleye was almost gone from the Saginaw. Today, conservation and environmental cleanup efforts have brought this popular gamefish back in great numbers. The current standings show the average fish is around 10 pounds and the largest as of this posting was 13.6 pounds. That's a nice fish!
These pictures were taken on Friday evening about 5:15. The fishing is best from this time to shortly after dark. The fishermen are just beginning to gather after work. Easy access to the river allows fishermen to park downtown and walk to the river.
The setting sun highlights the snowmobile tracks on the river. The next evening the pack gathers for a blast down the Saginaw.
Looking south toward downtown from one of the four bridges across the Saginaw. Looking north across the railroad bridge toward the Saginaw Bay.
His own private fishing hole. On the weekend it was like this for miles.
Fun for the whole family on the sledding hills in the park. Oh to be a kid again!
